Coaching, Tutoring, and Training from Dr. Robert Hogan

Robert Hogan, PhD, is an accomplished business-writing trainer with over 40 years’ experience training business writers in companies, government agencies, and universities. He has been a professor of business report writing and communications at Illinois State University, the University of Pittsburgh, and Allegheny County Community College. He is a specialist in writing training with articles about writing training in English Education, College Composition and Communication, Research in the Teaching of English, and various conference proceedings. He has written two books training business writers: Explicit Business Writing: Best Practices for the Twenty-first Century, and Business Writing Skills for Forensic Laboratory Managers. Dr. Hogan is the director of the Business Writing Center.

Dr. Hogan’s PhD is in training and supervision, with a focus on training in writing. He is the author of most of the training materials in the 45 courses offered by the Business Writing Center. As a result, he selects the training from the courses that will be most beneficial for you. As you learn with Dr. Hogan, you can expect the following:

BWC130 Individualized Writing for Nonnative Speakers of English 

The Individualized Writing for Nonnative Speakers of English course focuses on language and usage for nonnative speakers of English. Dr. Hogan will read samples of your writing, identify skills you need to learn, list the sentences with problems in each area with corrections showing how they should have been written, assign readings from the grammar textbook, answer any questions you have about the skill, have you practice the skill, and give you an online quiz containing sentences from your original writing sample to be sure you have learned the skills. The course will give you the focused training you need to write correct business English. BWC110 Basic Grammar Skills Tutorial 

In this individualized tutoring and training course, Dr. Hogan will focus on  your language, grammar, punctuation, style, spelling, sentence structure, and word usage. He will help you learn new patterns to replace the old by using your own sentences as examples. The teaching, practice, and tests are based on your own writing as much as possible. It is highly individualized. Dr. Hogan will carefully evaluate writing samples and prescribe study and practice based on your unique needs. BWC520 Coaching through Writing Actual Documents 

In the BWC520 Coaching through Writing Actual Documents course, Dr. Hogan will evaluate drafts of documents you’re writing in the work setting and work with you to revise them to make the high-quality, polished business documents. It is an ideal way to polish the documents you’re writing while learning the skills you need to enhance your writing. You might enroll in the course when you have a report or proposal you must write, and you want it to be highest quality to achieve your goals.

Dr. Hogan will write comments on all aspects of your writing, including language, grammar, clarity, organization, conciseness,effectiveness, sentences, words, and style. He will then coach you through revising the documents to produce high-quality, polished final drafts. BWC510 Individualized Business Writing Training

In the Individualized Business Writing Training course, Dr. Hogan provides case studies for you to write about. He evaluates your writing, commenting on anything in you writing that needs improvement, including language, grammar, clarity, organization, conciseness,effectiveness, sentences, words, style, and any other aspect of your writing that needs improvement. He will then prescribe writing assignments to give you the training you need and coach you through learning the skills.  You will have access to Dr. Hogan by phone or email at any time during the course.

In this course, Dr. Hogan will combine portions of existing writing courses for you if you want to learn skills in any of the 45 courses offered by the Business Writing Center. For example, one business person wanted to learn business writing skills and how to edit. Dr. Hogan combined lessons from the two courses into an individualized course of study. More…

BWC 625 Customized Business Writing Skills Course 

In the Customized Business Writing Skills course, Dr. Hogan will identify your training needs and develop a course to satisfy the needs. Most often, the course will be oriented toward training you to write a specialized document, such as a report you write for your company. Dr. Hogan will analyze the structure and requirements of the documents you want training for, write the syllabus based on the analysis of the document, and draw training from the Business Writing Center’s 45 courses that will teach the skills you need. The syllabus can be approved by your supervisor before the training begins. The Business Writing Center will also work with a human resources or training department to develop a course for training you or groups of employees. More…

This customized course uses existing lessons taken from Business Writing Center courses. The Business Writing Center will not be writing new materials for this course. You may have the Business Writing Center create a course with new materials that fit your company’s training needs and use your company’s documents as examples. To have the Business Writing Center develop a course with new materials to fit your needs, contact Dr. Hogan about giving you a bid for the development.

BWC225 Explicit Business Writing with Additional Training 

The Explicit Business Writing with Additional Training course is a thorough, in-depth course that teaches all the best practices that business-writing professionals now know create explicit email, memos, letters, reports, and other business documents. It contains 39 lessons, 35 activities, and 17 writing samples Dr. Hogan evaluates. The text used in the course is Dr. Hogan’s book, Explicit Business Writing: Best Practices for the Twenty-First Century. You will receive a copy of the book for use in the course. The course teaches the best practices to a mastery level. The training is sufficiently thorough that graduates are able to edit others’ work and teach the principles.
